Modelling and Simulation of Carotid Artery in Microgravity

Computational fluid dynamics becomes an influential tool which gains insight into the physical performance of the circulatory system. Cardiovascular disease received less attention from a computational viewpoint; the present work analyses the blood flow in common carotid artery in head down tilt position. The common carotid artery has complex geometry and material properties, for this, 3-D computational models can improve our capability of understanding the mechanisms of disease progression. 3-D geometry of the common carotid artery is created in Creo, and Ansys CFX analyzes blood flow performance. Mainly, laminar flow is investigated for 10 timesteps, Blood is modeled as Non- Newtonian fluid, and the viscous laminar epsilon model is used during analysis. The simulations produce blood pressure effect on the walls of the human artery and velocity variation in inlet and outlet region with microgravity, and this methodology can be used to explore blood flow behavior in the blood vessel and to relate these to critical clinical issues.
