TM Mode Rectangular Waveguide Antenna for 2.3GHz LTE Recipient Signal Enhancement

One method to improve quality of signal in wireless communication is by strengthening the recipient signal of antenna. In this paper, the development of TM mode rectangular waveguide antenna applied to enhance 2.3GHz Long-Term Evolution (LTE) reception signal is presented. The proposed rectangular waveguide antenna which is designed to work at the resonant frequency of 2.3GHz aims to be implemented as an external antenna on a Huawei E5372s modem device. Some parametric studies on the antenna geometry are carried out during the design process by varying length of probe excitation and the dimension of waveguide. From the measurement of antenna characteristics, the reflection coefficient of -29.535dB at the resonant frequency of 2.309GHz can be achieved by the realized antenna with the bandwidth and gain achievement of 145MHz and 3.287dBi, respectively. While from the measurement of signal quality, the realized TM mode rectangular waveguide antenna can enhance up to 6.3dB the power of recipient signal from -42.58dBm to -36.28dBm, and improve the rate of average download up to 10.75Mbps or around 3 times faster than using the modem without an external antenna.
