Real Power Transmission Loss Minimization and Bus Voltage Improvement Using STATCOM

The modernization in all sectors has been resulted in terms of day-by-day continuously increased electrical power demand. Because of which, the challenges of heavy real and reactive power loss as well as voltage instability have been surfaced. In this paper, a shunt-type FACTS device known as STATCOM has been used to overcome these challenges. Keeping an eye on this, an optimal dispatch problem for reactive power is solved in presence of STATCOM. The real power transmission losses are minimized and the results are analysed for different loading situations in the standard IEEE 14 bus test system. All the simulations are carried out on DigSILENT PowerFactory software. The simulation results obtained which demonstrate the significant role of STATCOM in the real power transmission loss reduction and bus voltages of the power network.
