Design and Simulation of an UWB Microstrip Patch Antenna for Cancer Detection and Treatment

An UWB microstrip patch antenna operating at the resonant frequency of 8.11 GHz is proposed for cancer detection and treatment. By using a slotted structure microstrip patch, antenna bandwidth has been increased significantly. The bandwidth of the antenna is 6.71 GHz at -10 dB return loss and the operating frequency ranges from 5 GHz to 12 GHz in free space. Moreover, the antenna achieves a high radiation efficiency of 90.89 % and a gain of 4.59 dB in the given bandwidth. The proposed antenna has an overall volume of 40 × 20 × 1.67 mm

. The antenna is simulated with FR-4 dielectric substrate with a thickness of 1.6 mm because of its low-cost and availability. In addition, a six-layer biological tissue model consisting of skin, fat, outer cortical bone, cancellous bone, inner cortical bone and muscle with a tumor of 10 mm radius is modeled in software to assess the antenna performance for specified application. An appropriate distance of 2.5 mm is maintained between the proposed antenna and the phantom model to alleviate skin burn and other side-effects. Cancer detection and treatment are confirmed with acquiring higher SAR value in cancerous cells than in the normal healthy tissue.
