Fragility and Resiliency in Low Inertia Power Systems Using Frequency Dynamics

Power-frequency facilitates easy and simple interpretation for system operators to enable them to take quick decisions in emergency situation. This paper presents a new analysis for frequency behavior of low inertia power systems on the basis of which electrical fragility and resiliency are defined. Measures are suggested to assess impact of penetration of renewable energy sources on power systems. Formulation is based on a new hyperbolic power-frequency equation. Equilibrium points are defined in frequency domain. Dynamic behavior resulting from outages is analyzed. Analysis works with a simpler set of equations which offers better understanding of dynamics. The analysis is useful for planning purposes.
