Formation and Migration of Hot Water Mass in the Waterbody of Jiaozhou Bay

Based on the survey on the waterbody of Jiaozhou Bay in May, June, July, August, September and October of 1980, the authors studied the horizontal distribution of surface layer and regional variation of temperature of the waterbody of Jiaozhou Bay. The results show that the water temperature of Jiaozhou Bay in May, June, July, August, September and October range from 10.80 to 26.53 degrees, and the temperature in August rose to the peak. From May to August, the temperature variation generally showed a rising trend. From May to June, the high temperature zone moved from the northern coastal area to the western part of the inner bay mouth. From July to August, the high temperature zone migrated from the northern coastal water to the western area inside the Bay mouth. From September and October, the temperature variation generally showed a declining trend and the high temperature zones gathered in the water outside the Bay mouth. Yang Dongfang put forward the concept "hot water mass", which is defined as the waterbody of an area hotter than the surrounding area inside a waterbody, also known as "Yang Dongfang hot water mass". In May, the atmosphere and the sun transported heat to the surface of Jiaozhou Bay, and a hot water mass formed in and around the northern coastal water. By June, tidal and current movements brought the hot water mass to the deep water area in the west of the Bay mouth. In July, a hot water mass formed in the northern coastal water. By August, the hot water mass migrated to the western water inside the Bay mouth. From September to October, the high temperature zone is located in the outer water of Jiaozhou Bay, and there is no hot water mass.
