Cooperativity as an Emergent Phenomenon

We discuss on hemoglobin (Hb) some aspects of emergence that clash with statistical thermodynamics. Hb serves as a model for most structure-function relationships of molecular systems biology. Its emergent property is cooperativity. Cooperative chemical binding of oxygen to the Hb tetramer is studied since 1904, and one can recognize features typical of emergent phenomena.
