The use of coordinated control to mitigate the impact of voltage sags caused by motor start

This paper presents preliminary results of the investigation of the possibility to improve the voltage quality by introducing a coordinated control of electric power system components that exhibit voltage control capabilities. It is believed that the coordination of the controls allows for a partial reduction of the costs associated with the installation of new voltage sag mitigation equipment. Also a numerical proportional-integral-derivative controller tuning technique was developed to address the robustness issue. The validity of the proposed strategy of voltage quality improvement was verified by means of nonlinear EMTDC simulations.
