Dual-Band RFID Antenna Design for Infrastructure Health Monitoring

In this paper, a dual-band RFID antenna is designed to operate at 0.92 GHz and 2.5 GHz for data acquisition and wireless power transmission for infrastructure health monitoring applications. The antenna has a protruding stub, radiating patch with a slot, and a ground plane stub. The initial design parameters resulted in a dual-band RFID antenna that resonated at 2.37 GHz and 5.88 GHz. A parametric study was performed to investigate the effect of the design parameters on the resonant frequency and magnitude of the reflection coefficient of the antenna. From this parametric study, key design parameters such as the length of the protruding stub, the width and length of the radiating patch were identified and used to tune the antenna to operate at 0.92 GHz and 2.5 GHz while having acceptable directivity. The antenna has a planar geometry and is 88 mm × 60 mm × 3.2 mm in dimensions which makes it suitable to be mounted on concrete structures for infrastructure health monitoring applications.
