Abstract:

In this paper an efficient smart system is presented for monitoring and controlling the home electricity network. The system is designed and constructed from scratch, which means the circuit and the PCB is designed and constructed and the necessary components are integrated. Finally, the microprocessor is programmed in order to analyze (using a cloud service) the collected data and make the necessary decisions. The heart of the system is the Tensilica Xtensa Diamond Standard 106 microprocessor and an Android OS based application is used for the interaction with the user. For demonstration purposes, a smart power strip was implemented providing basic functionality like turning on/off remotely the power in selected ports. However the system can be easily adapted in a Home Electrical Panel (Central Home Electrical Switchboard) for monitoring and controlling the overall home electricity network. The aim is to create a multi-functional, modular device, keeping the cost low and ensuring ease of installation and use.
