Metamaterial-Based Temperature Sensor Comprised of VO2 Nano-Ribbons

Vanadium dioxide (VO2)-based temperature sensor is investigated under optical incidence. The proposed device is comprised of metamaterial which incorporates a periodic array of VO2 nano-ribbons mounted over stacked multilayers of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) and silicon dioxide (SiO2). The essence of the proposed design is the temperature-dependence property of the permittivity of VO2 medium that constitutes the top metasurface. Attenuated reflection characteristics of the structure are investigated. The sensing feature of proposed configuration is analyzed in term of shifts in reflection minima corresponding to changes in ambient temperature.
