Effects of Body Tissues Dielectric Properties on Induced Voltage on Cardiac Pacemaker's Lead

The paper is concerned with the numerical modeling and assessment of the interference electrical voltage on the cardiac implant's lead model within the high-fidelity numerical phantom. The near-field exposure of the dipole antenna covering the GSM mobile phone transmission technology frequency was considered. The study was conducted by means of the numerical time-domain modeling utilizing the finite integration technique. The assessment was carried out in terms of the numerical calculations of the electric field distributions as well as the interference voltage induced on the implant's lead. The primary goal was to evaluate the effect of the tissue's dielectric properties on the levels of the induced voltage by changing the dielectric properties of the surrounding tissue layers: skin, fat, and muscle. Numerical results have shown that the variations of the induced voltage are less than ±6% when the conductivities and permittivities of the considered tissue layers vary up to ±10%. The results also indicate that the variations in the dielectric parameters of the muscle play a major role in the uncertainty of the estimates of the induced voltage compared to the other tissues considered.
