Physio-Vibes: A Biomedical Engineering Educational Kit for Highschool and Sophomore Students

This project aims to develop educational kits to introduce high school students and sophomore university students to the field of Biomedical Engineering. This field, being a booming field in Engineering and Sciences, we believe it is not being properly introduced to high school students neither sophomores, which is causing a shortage in experts. More specifically, surface Electrophysiological signals are the main concern of this project, from designing the acquisition circuits and amplifiers, to the extraction of main vital signs and display. The first and crucial step along our research process was to assess the problem by conducting surveys on 105 high school students and 57 sophomore university students. Upon analysis of statistical aspect of the results, the importance of increasing the awareness and knowledge about the concepts and basics of Biomedical Engineering was emphasized, even with respect to sophomore Biomedical Engineering students that have a blurred image about their future studies, resulting in a 78.1% of the surveyed population interested in practical demonstration of Biomedical Engineering concepts via customized educational kits. In this view, the idea behind Physio-Vibes was strengthened and implemented by designing three core user-friendly kits being the Electrocardiograph Kit (ECG), the Electromyograph Kit (EMG) and Pulse Oximeter Kit (SPO2). Each kit was optimally designed and manufactured along with its respective user manual and experimental protocol that the user shall follow for proper use and ideal outcome, taking into consideration two main levels being high-school level and university sophomore level.
