Using Array of Antennas for Improving Digital Radio Reception in Mobile Car Receiver

In this paper we propose usage of multiple antennas (antenna array) for improving reception of digital radio signal in mobile receiver. In contrast to currently used systems we propose to use more than 2-antennas (in MISO scheme) together with novel algorithm for elimination of direct Doppler effect causing inter-carrier (ICI) interference in mobile systems. Some of the antenna will have directional characteristics that allow estimating the direction and speed of vehicular receiver. This feature has large impact on digital reception systems moving at high speeds. Performance of our solutions was evaluated in car entertainment systems for Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) radio and HD radio. Obtained results showed lower BER in the same conditions in comparison to the standard dual antenna system with Maximum Rate Combining (MRC) enabled.
