Conflict Detection in Rule Based IoT Systems

An IoT environment with a complex rule structure containing a large number of sensing and actuating devices increases the chances of creating rules with faulty behaviors. An IoT system which contains conflicting and incomplete rules is one example of such faulty systems. In this paper, we present a mechanism to detect conflicting and incomplete rules. First, we introduce a rule conflict mechanism with three categories to detect rule conflicts. Second, we define rule incompleteness and introduce a method to detect incomplete rules. Third, we present two methods to resolve rule conflicts. We demonstrate our approach in several scenarios.
