Gain Optimization of novel Raman-Parametric Hybrid amplifier for narrow channel Wavelength Division Multiplexed systems

We present an extensive analysis on the performance of Raman- Parametric cascade configuration in a narrow spaced WDM system. The analysis has been done in terms of Raman and Fiber Optic Parametric (FOPA) pump powers. The number of pumps used for Raman as well as parametric amplifier, their frequency and power are very critical to achievement of flat gain. Focus of this work is optimizing the pump powers. It has been found using single pump FOPA at 27 dBm helps in better FWM generated idler suppression against conventional FOPA power of 33.4 dBm. Using the cascade configuration of Raman-FOPA in 25 GHz, 96 channels L-band system, a maximum gain of 34.9 dB with the gain ripple less than 3.5 dB has been achieved. In terms of average Raman pump to FOPA power ratio of 1.1 gives the optimum signal gain.
