The Use of Information Technology to Minimize Traffic Congestion

The paper discusses the use of information technology to minimize traffic congestion. Statistical data on the number of vehicles accumulating in front of the stop line on a red traffic light was collected and analyzed. The degree of influence of the driver reaction time on the duration of the permissive signal is taken into account. Range of equipment use options to achieve the goals is considered. The practicability for using road meteorological stations, which will allow obtaining data on the road surface condition to determine the tire-road adhesion coefficient, has been stated. A fuzzy inference model based on the main parameters of the traffic flow has been developed. The rule base, which determines the traffic light cycle length depending on the parameters of the traffic flow, is formulated. The identified dependence can be used when programming the controller or hardware implementation of the corresponding fuzzy control algorithm in the form of a decision table.
