Design and Characterisation of Simple Planar Metamaterial Structure with Double Negative Properties

This paper proposes a novel planar metamaterial structure which displays double negative (DNG) properties in popular bands such as S and C. DNG refers to materials which show simultaneously negative permeability and permittivity. The proposed structure is developed through simulation using HFSS and its characterization is done through various methods such as S-parameter retrieval method and cavity perturbation method. The results of simulated and measured S parameters are used for the retrieval of various material properties. Further verification of obtained results is carried out through cavity perturbation, and the observed results using various methods complement each other confirming the DNG behavior of the newly designed material.
