Bifurcation Analysis and Experimentation of Peak Current-controlled Boost Converter

Switched-mode power converters are being widely used in power conversion systems. Due to the presence of highly nonlinear dynamics, a rich group of bifurcation and chaotic behaviors have been found in this family of converters. In most cases, these abnormal system behaviors can potentially cause instability issue for the converter operation. This paper presents the mathematical and experimental study of the period-doubling bifurcation in peak current-controlled boost converter. This study reveals the evolution of subharmonic orbits within the converter system under variation of supply voltage. The discrete-time model of the converter and computation results of the eigenvalues for the corresponding periodic orbits are demonstrated and discussed. Moreover, a brief guideline for establishing the experimental settings is also covered. The prototype converter has been built and tested, and the obtained results confirm the validity of the theoretical analysis.
