Development of Switched Reluctance Motor Drives with Power Factor Correction Charging Function for Electric Vehicle Application

This paper proposes a new switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive for electric vehicle application with power factor correction (PFC) charging functions. The method is based on boost circuit, which reuses one-phase winding of the motor itself and the switching devices of the drive circuit for PFC control. Motor driving mode and PFC front-end charging mode can be realized by adding just one relay to the main drive circuit. This PFC front-end control strategy can achieve high power factor (PF), low current harmonics, and stable DC voltage output. At the same time, by reusing the stator winding and devices of the main circuit, the size of the charging system and the costs can be reduced. Experiments on a three-phase 12/8 SRM confirm the effectiveness of the proposed drive and control strategy.
