A Low-Level Turn-to-Turn Fault Protection Scheme for Magnetically Controlled Shunt Reactor

In this paper, a turn-to-turn fault protection scheme is proposed for extra-high voltage (EHV) magnetically controlled shunt reactor (MCSR). The proposed scheme is based on the fact that the inductance of windings does not remain the same during normal operating conditions and turn-to-turn fault. Therefore, the parameter for identifying and differentiating turn-to-turn fault from a normal steady-state operation and other types of faults is the magnetizing inductance of the windings. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated under energization conditions, power regulation, external faults, and other internal faults. The simulation results in MATLAB/Simulink validate the effectiveness of the proposed protection scheme for detecting power winding (PW), control winding (CtrW), and compensation winding (CpW) turn-to-turn faults.
