Nanostructured Oxide-Metal Catalysts for Intra-Cylinder Catalysis

The paper discusses the preparation of cobalt and manganese oxide catalytic systems on cast piston aluminum alloy for intra-cylinder catalysis. It has been considered the features of the conversion coatings formation on silumin by plasma electrolytic oxidizing in alkaline electrolytes based on potassium pyrophosphate. The effect of the electrolyte components and processing conditions on the composition and the morphology of the surface layers has been studied. Plasma electrolytic oxidizing of internal combustion engines pistons allows the formation of alumina matrix containing manganese and cobalt oxides which evinces high catalytic properties. Manganese-containing oxide system demonstrates the highest fuel economy at 3-4 %. When using a piston with a cobalt oxides coating, toxic gas emissions are reduced: NO
_x
within 10 % and CO - of 15-18 %. The proposed systems can find application in intra cylinder catalysis technologies in order to reduce the toxicity of gas emissions of engines and increase their fuel efficiency.
