Aging Condition Assessment for Live XLPE-Type Cables through Precise High Frequency Impedance Phase Detection

This study presents a technique to assess the aging condition of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE-type) cables using the precise phase detection of their high frequency impedance. The correlation between the aging level of the cable and the phase of its 100 kHz impedance is validated through theory, simulations and experiments. The proposed method is non-intrusive and can be used on either energized or de-energized power lines.
