An Inductor-less DC to DC Converter Suitable For Use In 1500V Solar Power Applications

Transforming DC power from one voltage to another requires use of an intermediate energy storage system, invariably in the form of an inductor. A novel inductor-less topology is proposed here which involves moving charge from one capacitor to another using switches. Unlike switched capacitor topologies, the proposed topology uses fewer switches and capacitors. All power components have the same rating and since energy is transferred at the same voltage, the current transients are nonexistent. The proposed topology is attractive for use in 1500V solar power converters that need 24Vdc supply to power auxiliary loads including logic boards because it converts the available dc voltage from 1500V to 750V. This allows the use of commercially available power supplies for supplying the auxiliary load. Experimental results including efficiency data are given for operation at 1250 V, 200 W.
