A Conceptual Framework of Virtualization and Live-Migration for Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) Communications

The duplication of data in a cooperative cache is a big challenge in vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). Many existing schemes are available in the literature to reduce the replication in caching. The adaptation of virtualization and live-migration can resolve the duplication of data in the cache. This paper proposes a framework of container-based virtualization and live-migration for the vehicular ad-hoc network. The first part describes the current trend and challenges to the live-migration. The second part deals with the live-migration of containers in online and offline mode. Here LXC-container and CRIU (Checkpoint and Restore In Userspace) are used for container creation and migration process respectively. Live-migration is assessed under different running processes on the source side and checks its status on the target machine. Lastly, the performance evaluation of live-migration is performed concerning TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol) connections. The performance is measured by IPerf tool. The experimental results show that UDP connection outperforms than TCP in container-migration within a workgroup of two real machines. The proposed framework can become easily extendable to V2I communications, where virtualization in RSU can be done using LXC-container, while live-migration can be achieved using CRIU.
