Design of Axial Flux Induction Motor With Reduced Back Iron for Electric Vehicles

Axial flux induction motor is gradually attracting attention because of its advantages over conventional motors in applications of Electric Vehicles. These advantages include compact construction, better efficiency, high utilization of active materials, and good ventilation and cooling. In this paper, a six-pole distributed-winding and double-stator-double-rotor axial flux induction motor with reduced back iron for electric vehicles is proposed. The main design feature is that the rotors of the designed motor will be transparent to the magnetic fluxes from both sets of stator windings. With this structure, the axial attractive force is eliminated thus the mechanical bearing loss is reduced. In addition, the motor will have lighter weight and less volume thus save more materials. Results of finite element analysis in ANSYS Maxwell show that performance and magnetic flux density of the final motor design can meet all the design specifications.
