Precipitation Extremes Monitoring Using Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) Products

This study describes a usefulness of GSMaP Near-real-time Gauge-adjusted Rainfall Product (GSMaP_Gauge_NRT) provided by JAXA for monitoring drought from one-month to three-month and heavy rainfall from pentads up to a month. GSMaP_Gauge_NRT is processed 4 hours after observation and is the gauge-adjusted rainfall with spatial resolution of 0.1 degrees and temporal resolution 1 hour over the globe. In terms of latency and accuracy, it is the best product for a precipitation monitoring among the GSMaP products. Drought and heavy rainfall events are detected by the standardized precipitation index and percentiles over periods from April 2000 to March 2019, respectively. Case studies for drought and heavy rainfall in Asia-Pacific regions demonstrated feasibilities for the monitoring. These suggest monitoring of the precipitation extremes monitoring could be effective using the GSMaP_Gauge_NRT.
