Fault Location in Transmission Lines Using Smart Grid

This paper presents an application of the most recent fault location methods based on Traveling Waves, on an educational Smart Grid. Data was collected from the Grid using a bench oscilloscope and processed in MATLAB. An algorithm receives the signal and calculates fault distance, based on fault region and peak recognition. Wavelet transform is used to separate relevant Traveling Wave frequencies. Furthermore, use of delays between modes of a Clarke transformed signal are measured to determine the line half in which the fault occurred. Smart Grid data is also compared to ATP simulated experiments to determine advantages and limitations of the Grid usage.
