Comparative EMT-simulations of energisation of transmission equipment for offshore wind farms

The offshore wind industry has experienced rapid development in recent years in terms of capacity and complexity of wind farms. For proper optimisation of the wind farm design, an accurate digital simulation software is crucial for among others electromagnetic transient studies during e.g. energisation studies to assess compliance to local grid codes. The chosen modelling method for the electrical and magnetic simulation directly impacts the type and level of detail required for the simulation.This paper describes a comparison between the PSCAD, and PowerFactory software packages, for determining the energisation relevant phenomena. The voltage dip at the point of common coupling (PCC) and the sympathetic inrush current observed when energising a transformer adjacently to an online transformer will be analysed among others. Furthermore a comparison will be conducted between various transmission line models to determine the necessary level of detail.
