Computational Red Teaming for Air Traffic Management

Modelling and simulation have been successfully used in numerous applications in many different areas. This chapter describes an air traffic simulator called Air Traffic Operations and Management Simulator (ATOMS), which is coupled with a real‐time tactical advisory system for air traffic management called Trajectory Optimisation and Prediction of Live Air Traffic (TOP‐LAT), in which aircraft are modelled in ATOMS. Both systems provide the capability to evaluate advanced air traffic management concepts in a simulated environment that can handle both artificially generated situations and accurate replicas of real‐world situations. The chapter also describes a human‐in‐the‐loop application that investigates the cognitive aspects of air traffic controllers (ATCs) based on the computational red teaming (CRT) concept. To describe the CRT application in the air traffic context, the simulation environment that enabled the CRT exercise is described: the ATOMS air traffic simulator and the TOP‐LAT real‐time tactical advisory system for air traffic management.
