Metamaterial Application in a Circular Microstrip Antenna Developed for the Detection of Partial Discharges

In this work, the evaluation of the metamaterial application in the gain improvement of a circular microfita antenna developed for the detection of partial discharges is presented. For this, a rectangular Split Ring Resonator was combined with Capacitive Load Strip for the development of the proposed metamaterial unit cell. The designed metamaterial was individually simulated for the evaluation of its double negativity features (ε <; 0, μ <; 0). After the individual simulation, the metamaterial was applied as a superstrate for the evaluation of the impact on the circular reference microstrip antenna gain. From the obtained results, it was possible to verify that the application of the superstrate composed by metamaterial resulted in the increase of 1.15 dB in the reference antenna average gain.
