Wrist Vascular Biometric Capture Using a Portable Contactless System

Human vascular identification is one of the most popular biometric modalities nowadays. It is usually based on images captured with an external near-infrared illumination that is reflected by or transmitted through the region of study. There are four main extended variants of vein identification/verification: finger vein, hand palm vein, hand dorsal vein and wrist vein. Hand palm vein and finger vein identification are the most extended and adopted types, although the wrist vein variant, which is not very widely-used yet, has the same usability. It is just as safe as the other two and provides clearer, better-defined and easier-to-capture biometric data. In this paper, a near-infrared low-cost contactless system for biometric wrist vein image capturing and visualization is designed. For this purpose, a non-infrared commercial camera has been modified and an infrared LED-light PCB has been designed. For the biometric identification analysis, a database and a contactless algorithm software will be implemented in the near future. This work demonstrates that the hardware employed is suitable for creating a small-sized and low-cost contactless system that may be used in non-controlled ambient light conditions.
