Role of Bio-Inspired Algorithms for Designing Protocols in MANET-Review

Recent advancements made in wireless technologies has gained much interest among the researchers. In specific, Mobile Adhoc Networks (MANET) is an expedient networking paradigm which utilized on applications such as emergency, disaster and tactical operations. Due to its flexible and scalable nature, it covers many applications with some degradation. Routing is the main function of the wireless networks and thus designing of routing protocols play a vital role in adhoc networks. In recent days, the technical advancement of routing protocols have been inclined and combined with bio-inspired model i.e social behaviors. This paper reviews about the role of bio-inspired algorithms for designing protocols in MANET. Initially, the prior routing protocols are discussed by stating their merits and demerits of their key attributes. A comparative analysis of prior routing protocols are tabulated in perceptible manner. Then, several existing papers related to bio-inspired models are also discussed to find the research gaps. Finally, the issues still pertains in bio-inspired models of MANET environment are presented. This review study paves a new insight for an upcoming researcher in the field of swarm intelligence.
