Broad Band and Wide Scan SIW Cavity-backed Phased Arrays for 5G Applications

In this paper, a novel wideband cavity backed planar antenna and its arrays for fifth-generation (5G) wireless cellular networks is proposed. The proposed element is composed of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity, hollow cavity, and stacked patches. It presents the advantages of compact size, simple feed structure, and low profile. The design has been constructed with a 8×8 (64 element) array. Results show that the infinite array unit cell achieves about 19% bandwidth (26.2-31.7 GHz) with active VSWR ≤ 2 when scanning up to ±40°, and nearly 16.6% bandwidth (26-30.7 GHz) with VSWR ≤ 3.6 when scanning up to ±65° in all azimuth planes. Numerical Results of full-wave simulation by virtue of HFSS demonstrate the design.
