Enhanced Successive Cancellation for Decoding of Polar Codes with Very Low Latency through Multiple Parity Checks

The class of polar codes is the latest development in the field of error correcting for digital communications. One problem with polar codes is that they suffer long latency in the decoding due to the successive-cancellation (SC) nature in the decision process. Various methods have been proposed to ease this problem. In particular, a scheme called simplified successive cancellation (SSC) was proposed shortly after the introduction of polar codes. Then, an improved version of SSC, which is referred to as fast simplified successive cancellation (FSSC) in this paper, was proposed. In this paper, some ideas in SSC and FSSC are further extended to enable even faster decoding of polar codes. We refer to this this newly proposed scheme as enhanced fast simplified successive cancellation (EFSSC). Its computation latency is analyzed and compared to SC, SSC, and FSSC. Moreover, its BLER (block error rate) performance is also presented.
