Fault-Tolerant Scheduling for Distributed Sensor Networks

Energy efficient fault tolerant node scheduling is major design concern in highly dense distributed sensor networks (DSNs) for adequate sensing area coverage. In order to maintain sufficient coverage, the node scheduling must be optimal by making some of the sensor nodes into BACKOFF state while maintaining a fault tolerant minimal subset of OPERATIONAL nodes. This paper present the Fault-tolerant Adaptive Node Scheduling (FANS) mechanism, based on the relative battery voltage of the discharge curve. FANS uses battery discharge curve for computation of optimal wakeup rate of BACKOFF nodes by considering the node failure probabilities based on bathtub curve. The computation of fault-tolerant Adaptive Backoff Time (ABT) is derived from polynomial regression applied on the discharge curve and failure probabilities based on the Weibull distribution of the bathtub curve. The performance evaluation is tested through simulation to evaluate the performance of FANS. The simulation results show that FANS can maintain a higher number of OPERATIONAL nodes which higher coverage and lesser energy consumption as compared to OBSP and RBSP respectively.
