Use of Remote Sensing Data for Exploring Potential Evapotranspiration Over Gangtok

In the present work, we have considered Gangtok region (latitude: 27:3; longitude: 83:3) and estimated daily evapotranspiration for the year 2008 for the purpose of estimating and partitioning evapotranspiration into evaporation and transpiration using Micrometreology based Penman Monteith method. Daily evapotranspiration (ET) values were calculated using Micrometreology based method and the evaporation and transpiration components were separated using the Leaf Area Index values from evapotranspiration over a year of 2008. The maximum evapotranspiration is observed in the month of April 2.10 mm/day and minimum in the month of July 0.50 mm/day. November has the highest Evaporation values and transpiration value is maximum in the month of April. The changes in Leaf Area Index reciprocate the vegetation activities over Gangtok for the year 2008. The separation of evaporation and transpiration clearly indicates the water intake of the crops/plants and the vegetation activity over Gangtok.
