Air Quality Estimation Using Satellite and In-situ Data for Kyiv City within ERA-PLANET Project

For evaluating in quantitative manner the progress of achieving the sustainable development goals and how big the progress is, a global indicator framework was developed. In this paper, we propose the approach to the comprehensive Air Quality (AQ) monitoring based on harmonized satellite and in-situ data in the framework of the HORIZON 2020 Project. Within this survey we describe conceptual architecture of the infrastructure to measure, in particular, nitrogen dioxide (NO
₂
), carbon monoxide (CO), Particles less than 2.5 μm (PM
_2.5
), Particles less than 10 μm (PM
₁₀
) concentration over the Kyiv city using up-to-date monitoring instruments; we describe requirements for information tools and network for informing Kyiv city community on the state of AQ that will be created on the base of existing AQ monitoring stations. The comprehensive review of in-situ and satellite measurements of atmospheric pollutants is provided as well as the results of validation of global AQ products from Sentinel-5 Precursor (Sentinel-5P) and Copernicus Air Monitoring Service (CAMS) with the use of available in-situ data.
