Production of Drug Particles using Pulsed Laser Ablation in Liquid (PLAL) Technique

According to the definition of the biopharmaceutical classification system 40% of the currently marketed drugs are poorly water-soluble, moreover 90% of drugs in development phase are also characterized as poorly water-soluble [1]. Because of this trend in drug development, pharmaceutical technology presents an important field in organic micro- and nanoparticle generation. Smaller drug particles provide higher surface to volume ratio, which indicates improved dissolution rate and transport characteristics resulting in their faster absorption and uptake by human cells [2, 3]. Pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) technique is proved to be an effective method to create inorganic and organic particles which are collected in liquid. PLAL is a simple, fast and chemical free way of creating different particles for medical applications [4, 5].
