Traffic modeling and performance analysis for dual-band systems

A wireless system operating on two frequency bands is analyzed and modeled through computer simulation. In this dual-band system, co-exists the single-band mobile capable of operating only on one band and the dual-band mobile capable of operating on both bands. We consider three system performance parameters in evaluation of a dual-band wireless system: mobile call blocking rate, frequency band blocking rate and call overflow rate from band to band. An analytical method is proposed to estimate these system performance parameters and a set of traffic performance engineering functions are used. The estimation error is analyzed and compared with the actual dual-band system performance through traffic modeling and computer simulation. The estimation error for average mobile call blocking rate is low, less than 0.02, if the designed grade of service is better than 10% blocking. Examples are shown on the use of the proposed traffic engineering functions for system planning.
