Metantennas: MultiFunctional Metasurface Antennas

Metasurfaces have been widely investigated for antenna design and wave manipulation. As electromagnetic (EM) phenomena are frequency dependent, it is possible to achieve multiple functionalities at the different operating frequencies using a metasurface, namely multifunctional metasurface (MFMS). Based on such a concept of MFMS this paper proposes two shared-aperture metasurface antennas, metantenas for multiband operation. The modal behaviors of metasurface are determined by means of characteristic mode analysis (CMA) for low frequency radiation. As operating frequency increases, the metasurface becomes frequency selective or partially reflection at high frequency bands. The independent modulations of MFMS at each band enable the high flexibility for shared-aperture antenna applications.
