Improved Throughput Stabilizing Scheme for Group Paging in mMTC: A Traffic Scattering Perspective

Group paging (GP) is a typical overload control scheme for massive machine-type communications (mMTC). To further improve the performance of GP, a traffic scattering scheme has been proposed where MTC devices being paged are scattered into different random access (RA) slots to access the network. However, the throughput of the scheme dramatically decreases when the paging interval is long and the number of devices is large. To solve this problem, we propose an improved throughput stabilizing scheme for GP, where a backoff-free traffic scattering strategy is adopted to reduce the average access delay. In particular, by comprehensively considering the influence of the number of RA requests the eNB can serve, a new analysis model is proposed to study the system throughput. Based on the results, we obtain the optimal scattering factor, i.e., the optimal number of devices scattered into each RA slot, with which the throughput can be stabilized at a high level. Simulation results verify the validity of our scheme.
