Development of Advanced Clinical Research Application: PAINRelieveIt using Patient Feedback

Clinical research, when performed on a large scale, requires tools that can adapt to the needs of capturing a large amount of data while being usable by the specific intended audience. Developing tools for clinical studies not only requires profound programming skills but also demands experience in clinical research settings such as hospice to understand the user. Our aim was to develop a tool, using feedback from actual users. We sought a tool that is platform independent, usable, multi-lingual and secure. We used the patient feedback from our previous use of clinical research tools to develop an advanced version called PAINRelieveIt. We used feedback from 2 assessment tools that we created and used over a decade, a client computer-based tool and a windows-based internet version; and developed PAINRelieveIt: a self-report, pain-assessment tool for patients. PAINRelieveIt is built mindful of the users who are different from a normal web application user because of their frailty. PAINRelieveIt as of now is facilitating research for 3 different studies and has the capacity to support multiple research studies with its modular design. It is multi-lingual and is used to conduct research in both English and Turkish languages. Such capabilities on top of the user friendliness and the ease of access on any platform makes it an ultimate tool for conducting clinical research. We constantly evaluate the feedback received from PAINRelieveIt users to make it a selfevolving tool.
