An Improved Approach to Defining of Rated Power of Static Var Compensator for Electric Arc Furnace

The paper investigates the new approach to the choice of power of the Static Var Compensator, which is based on behavior analysis of symmetrical components of electric arc furnace currents at different stages of the melt. The current methods used by producers of compensating devices for electric arc furnaces frequently give out overestimated value of the filter compensating circuit and the thyristor controlled reactor, which results in the increased cost of the installation and in higher operating costs of the compensators due to higher active power losses in the elements of the compensator. The patterns of behavior of symmetrical components of electric arc currents were established; the influence of asymmetrical conditions on the target values of susceptance and on the total power of the electric arc furnace compensator was demonstrated; statistical data about the distribution of symmetrical components of currents of electric arc furnaces of different classes and power were obtained.
