Study on the storm surge loss estimation along the Tokyo Bay coast

Because early damage prediction of natural disasters is required for society and insurance industries, a storm surge loss function that converts water level to loss along a bay was developed in this study. To derive the function, 600 strong storm surges resulting from typhoons reproduced by a stochastic typhoon model were calculated by a numerical storm surge model. Then, losses were estimated based on the damage functions and exposure data. Then, a loss function was developed based on the water levels at the Tokyo tide station and the estimated loss was determined on the Tokyo Bay coast. The possible storm surge loss on the Tokyo Bay coast can be estimated by using the loss function developed immediately.
