A comparison of lumped parameter models of modified hybrid electromechanical valve actuator

This study introduces two lumped parameter models (LPM) to mathematically describe the static and transient response of modified hybrid valve actuator (MHVA). The actuator design is capable of large magnetic force generation with low energy consumption (at the start and during valve holding), permanent magnet demagnetization isolation and improved transient response. The lumped parameter models (LPM) developed using mathematical equations to approximate Finite Element Method (FEM) and experimental results of MHVA. The LPMs are categorized into linear and nonlinear models. Each model incorporates three subsystems including electrical, magnetic and mechanical which are developed and integrated in MATLAB software. Each LPM is separately compared with FEM and empirical results confirming improved dynamic performance and energy consumption. The LPMs presented in this study can be readily used for the controller design.
