LQR Based STATCOM Voltage Controller Using Genetic Algorithm and Invasive Weed Optimization

Static synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) defined as shunt-converter connection, with which the transmission line AC voltage can be fast controlled by its influence in reactive flow. The purpose of STATCOM is to control the voltage very fast and improve damping of interarea oscillations. In this paper, an LQR (Linear Quadratic Regulator) controller was designed for STATCOM-power system damping. Matrix coefficients for Q and R were selected in two different ways: The first technique was based on Genetic Algorithm (GA), while the second technique was based on Invasive Weed Optimization (IWO). Genetic Algorithm and Invasive Weed Optimization based LQR controllers results were compared with each other, and with a classic LQR controller results.
