Model-based Fuzzy Control of Renewable Energy Power Plants: A holistic approach

In this paper, a holistic approach of the model-based fuzzy control design for renewable energy power plants (RPP) is proposed. First, based on a systematic investigation of the requirements of RPP, a generic control system structure for power plants with different renewable energy sources such as sunlight, wind or ocean waves is derived. Second it will be shown how the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy framework is used to achieve the objectives for power optimization, power limitation and power tracking (active and reactive power) in RPP. Here, the entire energy converter chain of renewable energy power plants from power transformation (wind turbine rotor / PV module) over the power conversion (AC-DC, DC-DC, DC-AC) to the point of common coupling (PCC) is considered. Two examples, the control design of a large-scale wind power plant with power tracking for grid support and an off-grid PV power plant for DC micro grids illustrate the proposed approach.
