Wireless Information and Power Transfer in Three-Phase Two-Way DF-Relay Networks over Nakagami-m Fading

This paper analyzes the performance of three-phase bidirectional relay systems with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) over Nakagami-m fading environment. Here, a communication system consisting of three nodes is considered whereby two source nodes communicate to each other with the aid from a battery-enabled relay node. For realizing one round of end-to-end information transmission between two source nodes, three-time phases are required. In the first two consecutive phases, power-splitting (PS) approach is utilized at the relay node to harvest energy from the radiofrequency (RF) signals. In the third phase, for providing relay assistance, relay node relies on decode-and-forward (AF) operation. For this setup, accurate expressions for the overall system throughput and outage probability are derived over Nakagami-m fading channels. Numerical and simulation results validate the derived expression and reveal some critical design aspects of enabling RF-energy harvesting in such systems.
