Parameterization of Radar Reflectivity-Rain Rate Relation during Tropical Convective, Transition and Stratiform Rain Types

The facts about radar reflectivity (Z) and rain rate (R) vertical profiles are good tools for communicating with microwaves, weather radar, interfering systems, and cloud microphysics. In this study, vertical profiles of Z and R were obtained using vertically-pointing Ka-band radar which has been used for deducing the results on the relation at different transition stages of the tropical rainfall types (convective, transition and stratiform). The results presented were examine in order to match the results obtained by other researchers using the Disdrometers for the same rain range. The empirical relationships between R and Z are analyze to prove that there are effective changes in the coefficient of these relations and the equivalent parameters of the distribution (exponential) of the raindrop between the different transitional relationship stages of tropical rainfall categories. The radar reflectivity is been calculated from measured drop spectral which was found to be proportional to rainfall rate at each of the rain type stages. The unique feature of this study is the observation of the existence of the Bright Band (BB) at the stratiform rainfall stage and Non-Bright Band (NBB) at the convective rainfall stage.
